NOLA treasure?

Today it was a typical monday.  I got up, went to work and prepared for a day of stair design.  I was introduced to a new treasure though. Buttermilk drops.  Evidently these vanilla glazed,  fried balls of dough that melt in your mouth were a part of McKenzie’s.  McKenzie’s closed a while ago and to be honest, I was never a fan.  That is blasphemy in this part of the state.  If I recall correctly Mckenzie’s bakery closed just after Katrina, but to be honest, I am not concerned with the history.  I will allow those of you that are concerned to either correct me or look it up yourself.  Well another bakery started creating these balls of goodness.  Let me just say, they were delightful.  Take a look and try not to drewl at this ball of sugary awesomeness:

Buttermilk+Drop

It was “oh-my-awesomeness” good.  With that said, I searched the world wide web tonight to find a recipe.  I plan on trying it out next weekend.

Buttermilk Drops similar to McKenzie’s obtained from Times Picayune archive

Peanut or vegetable oil for deep frying.

1 cup all purpose flour

2 tsp sugar

1 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp ground ginger

1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

1 egg

1/2 cup buttermilk.

Vanilla glaze for coating.

Heat three inches of oil in a deep skillet or electric fryer to 350. Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, ginger and nutmeg in large bowl to blend; make a well in the center.

When the oil is hot, whisk egg and buttermilk in separate bowl, then pour into the well in the dry mix, stirring gently till blended.Drop the batter by rounded teaspoons into the hot oil without crowding.. Fry till golden on all sides, ( they should turn over by themselves as they cook), two or three minutes. Drain on paper towels, then roll in cinnamon sugar or cover in vanilla glaze.

GLAZE: 2 cups confectioners sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

2-4 tblsp milk, more if needed.Put buttermilk drops on rack. Stir together all the ingredients, add milk till its the consistency of heavy cream. Drizzle glaze over hot doughnuts.

MAKES ABOUT 20

Enjoy!  ….lifetiems of paper rainbows…W the girl with an extra 5 pounds on her butt due to this tastee find.
